Major Fuel Seizure at La Union Port Stuns Authorities
MANILA, Philippines — Authorities seized allegedly smuggled fuel worth P219.5 million at La Union Port, resulting in the arrest of 21 suspects. This significant confiscation of allegedly smuggled fuel highlights ongoing efforts to curb illicit trade in the region.
The Bureau of Customs (BOC) announced on Saturday that the operation was a joint effort with the Philippine Coast Guard and the National Bureau of Investigation. It stemmed from reports of a “paihi” scheme, an illegal method of transferring fuel from one vehicle to another.
Fuel Transfer Operation Halted
Customs Intelligence and Investigation Services Director Verne Enciso explained that the motor tanker, MT Bernadette, was caught transferring diesel fuel to a lorry truck when the authorities intervened. “Two lorry trucks were found carrying diesel fuel from the motor tanker,” he stated.
An initial tally revealed that the motor tanker was carrying 200,000 liters of diesel, while the two trucks held a combined total of 59,000 liters of the fuel. The seizure represents a major blow to the illegal fuel trade in the area.
Arrests and Legal Actions to Follow
During the raid, 10 crew members of the motor tanker and 11 individuals including drivers, porters, and alleged lookouts were apprehended. These 21 suspects face charges under Republic Act 10863, known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, and Republic Act 10963, the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Law.
Authorities will prosecute the owners, ship captain, crew, and others involved for violating customs and tax laws. Local officials noted that this crackdown is part of a broader campaign to eliminate smuggling and protect the economy.
