Continuity in Philippines China Diplomacy Assured by Incoming DFA Secretary

Incoming DFA Secretary Commits to Continuity in Philippines China Diplomacy

Incoming Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro has assured the public that the Philippines will maintain steady diplomacy and foreign policy with China amid ongoing maritime disputes. This commitment to continuity in Philippines China diplomacy reflects a clear intention to build on existing efforts despite challenges.

During a recent event commemorating 50 years of Philippine-China relations, Lazaro emphasized her resolve to sustain the diplomatic groundwork laid by her predecessor. She is currently serving as DFA undersecretary for bilateral relations and ASEAN affairs and will assume office as DFA Secretary on July 31.

“If you’re talking about political sense, as far as foreign affairs, foreign policy and diplomacy, I think that’s not a problem. There’s no challenges, there’s no difficulties,” she told reporters. Lazaro acknowledged the complexities in the bilateral relationship but stressed the importance of progress.

Balancing Challenges and Progress in Bilateral Relations

Lazaro pointed out that while political and maritime disputes persist, these issues are being handled through bilateral discussions. She highlighted the value of people-to-people connections as a foundation for moving forward.

“This is a perfect example of people-to-people relationship and we just have to look into the positive areas. But you know, the political part, the maritime issues, that’s something that is being dealt with bilaterally. So we will continue. There are challenges but we have to continue to move on,” she explained.

This approach underscores the ongoing commitment to dialogue and cooperation despite difficulties, aiming to preserve and strengthen ties between the two nations.

Chinese Ambassador Welcomes New DFA Leadership

Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines, Huang Xilian, expressed support for Lazaro’s appointment, praising the effective communication she has developed with Chinese officials. He described their exchanges as “very valuable” and expressed honor in managing diplomatic ties with the incoming Secretary.

In a social media post, the ambassador shared moments from Lazaro’s visit to Bahay Tsinoy, a museum dedicated to Filipino-Chinese heritage. He wrote, “Glad to join DFA USec Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro and her team at Bahay Tsinoy! We embarked on a meaningful journey through the rich history and culture of Filipino-Chinese communities. Let’s work side by side toward an even brighter future of bilateral relations.”

Preparing for ASEAN Chairmanship Amid Diplomatic Continuity

Lazaro’s appointment comes just months before the Philippines takes over the ASEAN chairmanship in 2026. Her leadership in the DFA will be crucial in navigating both regional and bilateral issues during this pivotal period.

Local sources indicate that the new DFA Secretary is focused on ensuring that Philippine foreign policy remains consistent and proactive, especially in maintaining stability and cooperation with China.
