Corruption and Inequality in Education Expose Painful Contrast

Corruption and Inequality in Education Highlighted

In the Philippines, the stark contrast between the lives of privileged political families and ordinary students has drawn sharp criticism. Kabataan Partylist Representative Renee Louise Co condemned this painful divide, emphasizing how corruption and inequality in education continue to plague the nation. The four-word keyphrase “corruption and inequality in education” captures this urgent issue that affects countless Filipino youths.

During a privilege speech, the lawmaker revealed how corruption in flood-control projects has deepened the struggles of young Filipinos from farming and working-class backgrounds. Instead of benefiting from education as a great equalizer, these students face overcrowded classrooms, underfunded universities, and unfinished school infrastructure, all while battling poverty.

Everyday Struggles of True Scholars

“While there are children of dynasties living in luxury, the true scholars of the nation are struggling while tired and hungry in overcrowded classrooms and underfunded universities,” Co said. She questioned why ordinary Filipino children inherit poverty and an education crisis while the offspring of political elites inherit power and privilege.

Community leaders noted that this disparity reflects a system that rewards political dynasties but abandons the youth. The education system, instead of uniting students, has become a great divider—exacerbating social inequalities rather than closing them.

Unfinished Schools and Overcrowded Classrooms

For example, the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology’s College of Education Integrated Developmental School (IDS) Mega Building has been under construction since 2020. Local officials reported it was already used in 2023 despite being incomplete. Similarly, the University of the Philippines Cebu’s College of Science building was only finished in phases, leaving students cramped in temporary rooms for years.

Luxury Amidst Educational Crisis

“Meanwhile, the nepo babies are able to graduate with their Ivy League diplomas, live in mansions, and drive luxury cars, but on the other hand, the children of the masses—the true scholars of the nation—are jostling for a seat in the lecture hall and are braving the floods during typhoons, because both flood control and classrooms are inadequate,” Co stressed.

She further questioned why government funds are allocated to flood control projects that remain incomplete and to opaque confidential funds, yet classrooms continue to deteriorate. “Why is it that classrooms crumble while contractors thrive? Why is it that our students drop out, while nepo babies get to fly out to study abroad?” she asked.

Public Outcry and Social Media Reaction

Officials reported that this criticism of privileged individuals, often called “nepo babies,” gained traction on social media after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered lifestyle checks on government officials. This followed revelations about nonexistent projects linked to 15 companies responsible for over 2,000 flood control projects, which accounted for roughly 18 percent of the government’s P545 billion flood-control budget.

Netizens have edited videos of these well-connected individuals flaunting luxurious lifestyles and branded items online, shaming them for allegedly benefiting from public funds amid widespread poverty and underfunded education.
