Manila Court Acquits Pura Luka Vega
Drag artist Pura Luka Vega, also known as Amadeus Fernando Pagente, has been acquitted by the Manila Regional Trial Court in the case involving his “Ama Namin” performance. The court dismissed charges of “indecent or immoral plays/shows” under Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code, connected to the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
The charges arose from Vega’s viral July 2023 act, where he appeared as a Jesus-like figure dancing to a remix of “Ama Namin” (The Lord’s Prayer). This performance sparked controversy and was challenged by the religious group Hijos Del Nazareno, who said it offended Catholic sensibilities.
Legal Ruling and Court’s Guidance
In its decision, the court highlighted that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove the charges. However, it urged Vega to exercise caution in artistic expressions out of respect for social harmony. Vega’s bail of ₱72,000 was also ordered to be returned.
Known for blending art and faith, Vega celebrated the verdict on social media. “Thank you for this wonderful news. One more case left. Laban lang,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter). He also wrote, “Matapang kong masasabing nanaig ang hustisya… Patuloy tayong lumaban at i-claim natin ang karapatang maging tunay na tayo. Walang kyeme!”
Advocacy and Community Response
Aside from being a drag performer, Vega serves as an advocacy officer at Rainbow Rights Philippines. He dedicated the court victory to the LGBTQIA+ community, emphasizing the importance of respecting faith while upholding freedom of expression.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for Hijos Del Nazareno, Alex Irasga, expressed respect for the court’s decision but reaffirmed their commitment to defending religious values. “We continue to hope for greater understanding and respect for sacred beliefs,” Irasga said.
