CPP-NPA Ranking Officer Captured in Cagayan de Oro
A ranking officer of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) with multiple arrest warrants was apprehended in a raid in Cagayan de Oro City, authorities confirmed on June 8. The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) led the operation after receiving credible intelligence about the suspect’s whereabouts.
CIDG officer-in-charge Col. Ranie P. Hachuela revealed that the 50-year-old communist leader, who currently serves as the secretary of the Far South Mindanao Region (FSMR) for the CPP-NPA, was found in Barangay Indahag during the Thursday, June 5 operation. His name appears in the military’s Periodical Status Report (PSR) for the 2nd Quarter of 2025.
Seized Weapons and Evidence
During the raid, CIDG agents confiscated a fragmentation grenade, a .45 caliber pistol, a steel magazine, several rounds of ammunition, two blasting caps, a detonating cord, and three identification cards. These items indicate the suspect’s involvement in armed activities.
Most Wanted Rebel Leader with Multiple Warrants
The arrested CPP-NPA ranking officer is listed as the number 5 Regional Most Wanted Person in Police Region Office 12 for violating Republic Act 11479, known as the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020, and for murder charges. Additionally, he is the number 5 most wanted in Police Region Office 11 for murder. Several local courts across Mindanao have issued arrest warrants against him.
CPP-NPA Losing Influence After Leader Deaths
Government security sources noted that the CPP-NPA has been steadily losing influence following the deaths of its top leaders. Among these are the CPP founder Joma Sison, and the couple Benito and Wilma Tiamzon, all highly regarded within the communist movement.
Sison passed away in December 2022 while in self-exile in the Netherlands. The Tiamzons were killed in a military operation in Samar in August 2022. Most recently, on June 7, the CPP announced the death of Luis “Ka Louie” Jalandoni, a former chief negotiator for the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP).
These developments signal a significant weakening of the CPP-NPA’s leadership and operational capacity.
