MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) recently highlighted the risks linked to generative artificial intelligence technology. This emerging field, known as generative AI technology, presents both opportunities and challenges for cybersecurity.
Understanding Generative AI Technology
At a recent summit in Pasay City, a data protection officer from CICC explained that unlike traditional AI, which mainly analyzes data, generative AI technology can create new content based on the information it has learned. This capability makes it a powerful tool but also a double-edged sword.
“Unlike traditional artificial intelligence, which is designed to analyze and interpret data, generative AI can produce original outputs based on the data that is trained on,” the official stated.
Threats Posed by Generative AI Technology
However, experts warn that cybercriminals might exploit generative AI technology to manipulate facts, execute cyberattacks, and commit various types of fraud. Reports indicate that malicious groups have already begun using this technology for digital crimes such as misinformation, deepfakes, and phishing attacks.
Common Cyber Threats Driven by AI
- Misinformation and deepfake creation
- Leakage of training data
- Exploitation of data privacy vulnerabilities
- Poisoning of AI models
- Bias exploitation
- Phishing schemes
- Malware distribution
Looking ahead, the data protection officer cautioned that generative AI technology could be misused to influence the upcoming 2025 elections. “Of course, there are a lot of people who will be manipulating our elections, and we should be ready,” he said.
Positive Uses of Generative AI Technology in Cybersecurity
On the flip side, generative AI technology also offers significant benefits for strengthening cybersecurity defenses. The CICC is already leveraging this technology to simulate cyber threats and train security teams more effectively.
These simulations help prepare responders to detect and counter sophisticated cyberattacks, enhancing the country’s overall cybersecurity posture.
Public Role and Reporting
Authorities encourage the public to stay vigilant and report any cybercrime activities to the designated response center through hotline 1326. Community cooperation remains key to addressing the growing challenges posed by generative AI technology.
