Fatal Accident on Shaw Boulevard Caught Two Drivers
Pasig City police arrested two male drivers following a tragic incident where a cyclist was run over and killed along Shaw Boulevard. The victim, a 36-year-old resident from Cainta, Rizal, was riding his mountain bike when the accident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon.
The local authorities reported that the cyclist collided with an illegally parked truck. “The driver of the Suzuki, a 39-year-old man from Barangay Buting, was unloading water gallons when the tailgate suddenly opened, hitting the right side of the victim’s bike,” police said.
Consequently, the cyclist lost control and fell onto the road. Shortly after, a Mitsubishi Montero Sport, driven by a 59-year-old man from Barangay Pinagbuhatan, accidentally ran over the victim. This collision resulted in fatal injuries, and the cyclist died instantly.
Legal Proceedings and Local Government Response
Both drivers were immediately detained and are now undergoing inquest proceedings on charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property. The police have impounded their vehicles as part of the investigation.
Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto later issued a statement emphasizing the commitment to stricter enforcement of traffic laws, particularly in bike lanes. “The TPMO (Traffic and Parking Management Office) committed to more strictly implement traffic laws, especially in the bike lane. We are also trying to contact the family of the victim now,” the mayor said.
Ensuring Safer Roads for Cyclists
This unfortunate event highlights the dangers cyclists face on busy streets like Shaw Boulevard. Officials are urged to intensify efforts to regulate traffic and prevent similar accidents from happening again. The case serves as a grim reminder of the importance of vigilance on the road for both drivers and cyclists alike.
