DPWH Addresses Damaged Slope Protection in Bohol
TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Bohol Second District Engineering Office has responded promptly to concerns about damaged slope protection along the Tagbilaran North Road in Barangay Corte Baud, Getafe town. Officials confirmed that repair efforts are actively ongoing to restore the affected area.
The damaged slope protection, a crucial infrastructure component, was compromised due to a heavy and continuous downpour on July 13, 2025. This intense rainfall caused an unexpected buildup of water in a streamlet located above the slope structure, which was not detected during the initial validation process, sources reported. The sudden water accumulation led to the collapse, underscoring the challenges of natural forces on infrastructure.
Clarifying the Cause of Damage
Local authorities clarified that the damage to the slope protection was not a result of poor design or construction flaws. “The damaged slope protection was not due to faulty design. It was constructed in accordance with the standard plan and specifications,” community members quoted the DPWH office as saying in an official statement dated August 29.
The project, valued at P27.7 million, is a part of the Organizational Outcome Insure Safe and Reliable National Road System – Asset Preservation Program. This program focuses on rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads affected by slips, slope collapses, and landslides, aiming to enhance road safety and durability.
Project Details and Timeline
Work on the project began on March 18, 2024, and was completed on March 17, 2025. It covered a total of 11 road sections, including the area now affected by the damage. Officials highlighted that the contract includes a Defects Liability or Warranty Period, ensuring accountability and quality assurance post-completion.
Immediate Repair Actions Underway
Following the incident, the contractor immediately commenced repair work at the affected section, identified as “Sta. 87+700.” The repair involves a revised design to address the water buildup issue and prevent future occurrences. These repairs are being undertaken without additional cost to the government, thanks to the warranty provisions, local leaders noted.
Commitment to Quality and Safety
OIC-District Engineer Fernando J. Talagsa assured the public that the DPWH values community feedback and remains dedicated to delivering infrastructure that meets high standards of quality and environmental sustainability. “We remain committed to deliver quality and environment-friendly infrastructure for the benefit of all,” Talagsa said.
As Bohol continues to develop its road network, such proactive measures reflect the agency’s resolve to safeguard public safety and maintain reliable transportation routes despite natural challenges.
