Heat Wave Alert: Dangerous Heat Index Levels Across Luzon and Visayas
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued warnings for 28 locations across Luzon and Visayas facing dangerous heat index levels this Thursday, May 22. The heat index values are expected to range between 42°C and 46°C, posing significant health risks.
Dagupan City in Pangasinan and Aparri in Cagayan are forecasted to experience the highest heat index at 46°C. Meanwhile, Laoag City in Ilocos Norte follows closely with a heat index of 45°C. These extreme temperature readings highlight the severity of the heat wave currently affecting these regions.
Other Areas Facing High Heat Index
A heat index of 44°C is expected in five areas: Batac in Ilocos Norte, Bacnotan in La Union, Tuguegarao City in Cagayan, San Ildefonso in Bulacan, and Camiling in Tarlac. Additionally, eight other locations may register 43°C. These include Bayombong in Nueva Vizcaya, Echague in Isabela, Baler in Aurora, Iba in Zambales, Daet in Camarines Norte, Masbate City in Masbate, Pili in Camarines Sur, and Dumangas in Iloilo.
Twelve more areas are likely to record a heat index of 42°C. These are Sinait in Ilocos Sur, Casiguran in Aurora, Muñoz in Nueva Ecija, Olongapo City in Zambales, Cavite City in Cavite, Infanta in Quezon, Legazpi City in Albay, Roxas City in Capiz, Iloilo City in Iloilo, Catarman in Northern Samar, Borongan in Eastern Samar, and Zamboanga City in Zamboanga del Sur.
Health Risks and Safety Recommendations
According to weather experts, heat indices between 42°C and 51°C fall into the “dangerous” category. This level significantly increases the likelihood of heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Prolonged exposure to such extreme heat can lead to heatstroke, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with existing health conditions.
Specialists urge residents in the affected areas to limit outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., the hours when the sun’s intensity peaks. Taking precautions during this critical period can help reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
“Limitahan ang paglabas lalo na sa pagitan ng alas-diyes ng umaga hanggang alas-tres ng hapon dahil dito pinakamainit ang panahon,” community leaders advise, emphasizing the importance of staying indoors during peak heat hours.
Preparing for the Heat Wave Ahead
Local authorities recommend staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. Communities are also encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors and family members regularly.
The ongoing heat wave underscores the need for increased awareness and preparedness as temperatures reach dangerous levels. Residents in Luzon and Visayas should stay informed through local advisories and take necessary actions to protect their health.
