Dangerous Heat Index Levels Affect 36 Areas Nationwide
Despite the arrival of the rainy season, dangerously high heat index levels continue to threaten 36 areas across the Philippines on Tuesday, June 3. Forecasters warn that the dangerous heat index will persist, putting many communities at risk.
According to the latest weather updates from local meteorological authorities, Guiuan in Eastern Samar is expected to experience the highest heat index, reaching up to 47°C. This extreme heat index signals a serious health concern for residents in the area.
Five other locations, including Aparri and Tuguegarao City in Cagayan, Echague in Isabela, Virac in Catanduanes, and Masbate City in Masbate, are forecasted to have a heat index of 45°C. These conditions can cause heat cramps, exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses.
More Areas Facing Elevated Heat Index
In addition, five more areas—Infanta in Quezon, Calapan in Oriental Mindoro, Daet in Camarines Norte, Juban in Sorsogon, and Dipolog in Zamboanga del Norte—may experience a heat index of 44°C. Meanwhile, twelve areas including Cavite City, Alabat in Quezon, and Legazpi City in Albay are likely to reach 43°C.
Further, thirteen areas such as Sinait in Ilocos Sur, Baler and Casirugan in Aurora, and Iloilo City are expected to register a heat index of 42°C. Local leaders emphasize caution, especially for vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions.
Health Risks and Safety Precautions
Meteorological experts classify heat index values between 42°C and 51°C as dangerous, due to increased risks of heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Extended exposure to these conditions may result in heatstroke, which poses a severe health threat.
Officials urge the public to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and seek shade or air-conditioned spaces when possible. Community health workers also stress the importance of monitoring symptoms related to heat stress.
