Davao City Coastline Calm After Kamchatka Earthquake
On Wednesday afternoon, Davao City’s coastline showed calm to slight seas accompanied by a low tide following a strong 8.7 magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka coast. The Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) provided this coastal monitoring update as of 12:52 p.m.
Officials noted that the low tide, measuring 0.11 meters (0.36 feet), was expected at 2:56 p.m., while the high tide of 1.46 meters (4.79 feet) was forecast for 9:12 p.m. Local authorities continue to monitor the conditions closely to ensure public safety.
Warnings for Pacific Coast Areas
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) advised residents in areas facing the Pacific Ocean to avoid beaches and coastal zones. The list includes provinces and regions such as Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and the Davao provinces.
Phivolcs also predicted that waves in these coastal areas would likely measure less than one meter between 1:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m., signaling a lower but still cautious risk level.
Class Suspensions Announced Amid Precautions
In response to the ongoing situation, several local governments suspended classes on Wednesday afternoon. The affected areas include:
- Albay: Rapu-rapu (all levels, afternoon classes)
- Catanduanes: Entire province (all levels, public and private from 12 p.m. onwards)
- Davao del Sur: Digos City barangays Sinawilan, Cogon, Aplaya, and Dawis (all levels, public and private)
- Davao Occidental: Coastal barangays only (all levels)
- Davao Oriental: Banaybanay and Mati City (all levels, public and private)
- Quezon: Polillo (all levels, afternoon classes); Real barangays including Cawayan and Poblacion (all levels)
- Southern Leyte: Hinunangan and Liloan (all levels, public and private from 12 p.m. onwards)
Local leaders emphasized the importance of staying alert and following instructions from disaster management authorities.
