Deputy Speaker Urges Transparency on Flood Infrastructure Projects
Deputy Speaker Ronaldo Puno emphasized that Davao City Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte should embrace transparency and openness when it comes to the flood infrastructure projects in Davao City. Officials reported that rather than being defensive, public servants must welcome investigations as part of their responsibility.
“That’s part of the job. And if you want to prove that what you did was right, why don’t you let them look at everything? That’s all,” Puno said in Filipino. This highlights the importance of accountability in public office, especially regarding flood infrastructure projects.
House Committee’s Broader Investigation
Local leaders noted that the House committee’s inquiry is not limited to Davao City alone. The investigation extends to other flood-prone regions, including areas visited by the President in Baguio and the Mountain Province. The committee is also set to examine concerns raised by Senator Ping Lacson.
“What I know is that they have many areas to investigate. Not only that, they will also go to the one the President went to in Baguio, in the Mountain Province. And everything that Sen. (Ping) Lacson mentioned, I’m sure they will go there,” Puno explained. This broader scope underlines the government’s commitment to ensuring flood control projects nationwide are properly implemented.
Encouraging Positive Outlook Amid Investigations
Community members said Deputy Speaker Puno encouraged public officials not to sulk but to view these investigations as opportunities to demonstrate the quality of their work. “So as servants of our government, let’s not sulk when we look at our projects there. Maybe they are good, right? Then they will be praised, right?” he added.
Rep. Duterte Defends Davao Flood Projects
Meanwhile, Rep. Paolo Duterte confidently stated that all flood infrastructure projects in his district have been properly implemented and completed. He pointed out that flooding in Davao subsides quickly, unlike in other areas he described as resembling “swimming pools.”
His remarks came after Manila 6th District Rep. Benny Abante urged Duterte’s brother, acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, to clarify the use of flood control funds in the city. Abante questioned where the funds were allocated and how they were spent.
Political Exchanges Amid Infrastructure Scrutiny
In response, Rep. Duterte challenged critics by saying, “perhaps you should start answering for your own questionable position in Congress.” This exchange underscores the political tensions surrounding flood infrastructure projects and accountability in government.
