Davao City Water District’s Septage Treatment Plant Progress
The Davao City Water District (DCWD) recently announced that its state-of-the-art Septage Treatment Plant (SpTP) is now 93 percent complete and is on track to be fully operational by September. This development marks a significant step forward in the city’s wastewater management efforts.
Located in Barangay Indangan, the Septage Treatment Plant plays a vital role in the Septage Management Program. This program aims to safely treat wastewater collected during its implementation, addressing the city’s growing sanitation needs.
Facility Capacity and Operational Plans
A DCWD representative shared that the facility can currently handle up to 100 cubic meters—or 100,000 gallons—of septage, with plans to expand capacity to 200 cubic meters in the future. This capacity supports the city’s efforts to improve environmental health and sanitation.
“The schedule of our five-year dislodging cycle is based on proximity to the treatment plant. It wouldn’t make sense to prioritize areas farthest from the SpTP first,” the spokesperson explained, emphasizing the practical approach to the program’s rollout.
Collaboration and Community Involvement
The Septage Management Program is a collaborative initiative between DCWD and the city government, serving as an interim solution for the city’s sewerage system. To ensure smooth operations, DCWD plans to prepare a monthly route schedule and notify affected households at least one month in advance. This notification allows homeowners to be present during the dislodging process.
Homeowners are also encouraged to make septic tanks or access holes more accessible. “Homeowners with their septic tanks or access holes located inside the house are urged to have a septic tank outside or an accessible access hole,” the spokesperson added.
This program reflects the city’s commitment to sustainable sanitation and improved public health.
