Death Toll from Habagat, Cyclones Rises to 34 Nationwide
The death toll from the effects of the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, and recent tropical cyclones has climbed to 34, authorities said. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported three new fatalities on Tuesday, all occurring in Calabarzon provinces.
The habagat and related cyclones have severely impacted millions across the Philippines. More than 6.6 million people nationwide have been affected, with widespread destruction to homes, infrastructure, and agriculture.
Fatalities and Missing Persons by Region
Of the 34 confirmed deaths, nine took place in the National Capital Region. Calabarzon followed closely with eight deaths, while Western Visayas reported six.
Three fatalities were recorded in both the Negros Island Region and Northern Mindanao. Central Luzon reported two deaths, and one each was confirmed in Mimaropa, Davao Region, and Caraga Region. Authorities also reported seven individuals remain missing, and 18 others sustained injuries.
Widespread Damage from Habagat and Cyclones
Recent tropical cyclones Crising, Dante, and Emong intensified the southwest monsoon, causing devastating damage. Widespread destruction included roofs being ripped off, trees uprooted, concrete electric posts toppled, streets flooding, and crops ruined in various areas.
The NDRRMC estimated that infrastructure damage reached approximately P7.3 billion, while agricultural losses amounted to about P1.6 billion. Although no tropical cyclones are currently within the Philippine Area of Responsibility, the habagat is expected to bring occasional rains to most parts of Luzon in the coming days.
Relief Efforts Underway
Local leaders noted that relief operations are ongoing. In one example, families in San Mateo, Rizal, gathered inside a covered court where government agencies distributed food packs, hygiene kits, child-friendly space kits, sleeping kits, women-friendly space kits, family water filtration kits, and ready-to-eat meals. Nearly 3,900 families, or about 14,390 individuals affected by the habagat’s impact in the area, received assistance.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development leads these efforts alongside local government units to ensure timely aid reaches those in need.
