SOGOD, Southern Leyte — Amid mounting legal challenges involving former President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte, reelectionist Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa said PDP-Laban’s campaign is gaining traction, particularly at the local level.
Speaking during a campaign stop on Wednesday, Dela Rosa pointed to growing support from local government units (LGUs), which he believes have been galvanized by what he described as “political persecution” of former President Duterte, who is currently detained in the Netherlands under the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“Campaign-wise, things have improved. LGUs are now more courageous in their support due to the injustice they believe was done to President Duterte,” Dela Rosa said in an ambush interview.
Dela Rosa, who placed within the Magic 12 in the April SWS senatorial survey, remains confident that other PDP-Laban candidates will also climb in the rankings. He cited improved polling among those in the 13th to 15th spots, noting that a 10–15% surge in voter preference could push them into winning positions.
He also dismissed the perceived split endorsements between ex-President Duterte and VP Sara, stating it’s ultimately the voters who will decide.
“Let the people choose. Whether it’s Imee, Camille, Gringo, or Ariel—support who you believe in,” he said, referring to senatorial hopefuls Imee Marcos, Camille Villar, Gringo Honasan, and Ariel Querubin.
OFW Voting Concerns and Visit to Duterte
Dela Rosa addressed growing mistrust in online voting among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), urging vigilance and participation.
“Your vote is sacred. No one can steal it unless we let them. Report anything suspicious,” he said.
When asked if he plans to visit Duterte in The Hague, Dela Rosa said he’s considering it after the elections, depending on visa availability and logistics.
Other PDP-Laban Candidates Sound Off
At the same campaign rally, Dr. Richard Mata defended himself against allegations of spreading fake news, citing his public visibility and large online following.
“The real fake news comes from those hiding behind anonymity. We, in Philippine Laban, believe in freedom of speech,” Mata said.
He also highlighted plans to use his medical expertise to support dengue prevention, and even danced on stage to energize supporters.
Lawyer Jayvee Hinlo, another senatorial candidate, focused on economic policy, advocating for industrialization and job creation through state-managed agriculture and local manufacturing.
“The Philippines should produce its own weapons, machinery, medicine, and vaccines. That’s how we create jobs,” Hinlo emphasized.
He also proposed amending the Procurement Law to favor Filipino-made products, even if they cost more, to strengthen local industries.
Atty. Vic Rodriguez, former executive secretary, reminded voters not to feel indebted to politicians offering aid during campaign season.
“That’s public money—your money. Accept it if you must, but don’t let it influence your vote,” Rodriguez urged, earning applause from the crowd.
Padilla Serenades Crowd, Backs Duterte Slate
Senator Robin Padilla also made an appearance, serenading attendees with “Wonderful Tonight” before delivering a message of support for the Duterte-aligned slate.
“We are in crisis. The solution isn’t chaos—it’s choosing leaders who can carry the legacy of service and order,” Padilla said.
Of the ten PDP-Laban senatorial candidates, only four were present at the rally. Kingdom of Jesus Christ leader Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, who is facing legal issues, was represented by Atty. Israelito Torreon.
