Lawmakers Clash Over Delay in Impeachment Process
Camarines Sur 3rd District Representative Gabriel Bordado Jr. raised serious concerns on Monday, June 2, about Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero’s decision to postpone the impeachment process against Vice President Sara Duterte. Bordado, a fellow Bicolano and one of the 215 signatories of the impeachment complaint, emphasized that his support stems from a principled commitment to transparency, integrity, and upholding the rule of law—not political motives.
The representative confronted Escudero’s choice to delay the reading of the articles of impeachment from June 2 to June 11 to prioritize Senate legislative business. “Are we to tell the Filipino people that impeachable offenses committed by the second highest official of the land are less urgent than our legislative targets?” Bordado questioned.
He further warned, “The nation is watching, and the nation deserves better.” Bordado also challenged whether this delay compromises their solemn duty as public servants sworn to uphold the Constitution.
Balancing Legislative Priorities and Accountability
Bordado criticized Escudero’s justification that the Senate must first tackle 12 priority bills and confirm over 200 pending presidential appointments. “When did convenience become a valid excuse to delay justice? When did we decide that institutional housekeeping is more important than institutional integrity?” he added, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
The allegations against Vice President Duterte include the misuse of over ₱600 million in confidential funds, defiance of congressional oversight, and improper conduct. Bordado insists this case transcends politics and urged fellow legislators not to let political expediency overshadow their constitutional responsibilities.
“We cannot allow political expediency to blunt the sword of accountability. We must not forget that our allegiance is not to any political party or personality—it is to the people, to the Constitution, and to the truth,” he said.
Legislators’ Duty Amid Allegations
He added, “As legislators, we are often measured not by what we pass, but by what we permit. If we permit delay in the face of alleged abuses of power, then we too become complicit in the erosion of our democracy.”
Local leaders noted that this debate highlights the tension between maintaining legislative schedules and ensuring timely justice for serious accusations. The public continues to watch closely as the impeachment process unfolds.
