Delivery of 12 New FA-50 Fighter Aircraft to Boost PAF
The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is set to complete the delivery of 12 new FA-50 fighter aircraft by 2030, the Department of National Defense (DND) announced recently. This acquisition of 12 FA-50 Block 70 jets from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) marks a key step in the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ modernization program.
DND spokesperson Asst. Sec. Arsenio Andolong confirmed that the delivery will proceed in phases over the next five years, aiming for full completion by 2030. This acquisition of 12 new FA-50 fighter aircraft strengthens the country’s air defense capabilities and reflects ongoing efforts to upgrade military assets.
Contract and Features of the FA-50 Block 70 Jets
Earlier this month, a notice to proceed was issued to the South Korean manufacturer, formalizing a contract valued at over USD 700 million (around P39 billion). The package includes mission equipment, integrated logistics support, as well as training and logistics information systems.
The FA-50 Block 70 model is considered the latest evolution of the FA-50 platform. It boasts advanced avionics, modern radar systems, and an extended operational range. According to sources, the jets will feature active electronically scanned array radar, aerial refueling capability, and sophisticated air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons systems.
Strategic Importance and Previous Acquisitions
This acquisition of 12 new FA-50 fighter aircraft significantly enhances the Philippines’ air defense in line with the DND’s Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept. Andolong emphasized that this move also strengthens the country’s defense ties with the Republic of Korea.
This deal marks the second time the Philippines has procured FA-50 jets from KAI. The first batch of 12 units was acquired in 2014 for USD 420 million (P18.9 billion). These jets played a crucial role during the 2017 Marawi siege, demonstrating their operational value.
Currently, 11 out of the original 12 jets remain operational after one aircraft crashed last March during a tactical night mission in Bukidnon, supporting the Philippine Army against communist insurgents.
Future Plans for the Air Force Fleet
A PAF spokesperson clarified that acquiring these new FA-50 fighter jets will not limit the possibility of obtaining other multi-role fighters (MRF) in the future. Options such as the US-made FA-16 from Lockheed Martin or Sweden’s Saab JAS-39 Gripen remain on the table to further diversify and strengthen the fleet.
The ongoing modernization, including the delivery of 12 new FA-50 fighter aircraft, reflects the Philippine government’s commitment to enhancing national defense capabilities amid evolving security challenges.
