DENR Launches Campaign to Save Endangered Animals
Even a simple mall visit can become an opportunity to support environmental conservation, especially efforts to protect endangered wildlife. Recently, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) introduced the “Save from Extinction” campaign at a vibrant fashion show held in a popular mall, aiming to raise awareness and encourage public participation in saving the country’s threatened species.
This campaign highlights the protection of six endangered animals, known as the “Big 6” in the Philippines. These species play crucial roles in maintaining the balance and health of their ecosystems, which ultimately benefits all living creatures, including humans.
Highlighting the Big 6 Endangered Animals
The featured animals in the campaign include the Philippine eagle, Philippine cockatoo, tamaraw, pawikan (sea turtle), dugong, and pangolin. These animals have become symbols of the country’s rich biodiversity but are now at serious risk due to habitat loss, illegal hunting, wildlife trafficking, pollution, and climate change.
According to sources familiar with the matter, DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga emphasized, “These are not just wildlife icons, they are keystone species where their essential roles are maintaining the health and balance of our ecosystems, so that others including you human beings may actually thrive. We all know that they are facing the real threat of extinction.”
She further explained the urgent challenges: “We are losing forest, wetlands, coral reefs, and other critical habitats faster than we can restore them and that they can regenerate on their own. Our species are being pushed to the brink by illegal hunting, wildlife trafficking, pollution, and the growing impact of climate change.”
Merchandise for Conservation Support
To engage the public and generate support, the DENR partnered with several organizations and retail outlets to offer limited edition merchandise featuring these endangered animals. Plush toys representing each species are available at select stores and carry a powerful message urging people to help save them from extinction.
Besides cuddly stuffed animals, stylish t-shirts and children’s clothing are also part of the collection, making it easier for supporters to contribute while spreading awareness through fashion. Proceeds from these exclusive items go directly to NGOs working alongside DENR on conservation projects.
As a representative from a leading mall operator described, “Every effort is a step towards our real impact. We hope today inspires more people to join us by lending your voice, your platform and your hearts to this cause. We can create a lasting change that can safeguard our planets for future generations.”
Collaborative Efforts for Wildlife Protection
The campaign launch brought together government officials, environmental groups, and community leaders to emphasize that protecting endangered animals requires collective action. They stressed that the complexity of threats cannot be tackled by the government alone; everyone must contribute to conserving natural habitats and combating illegal activities harming wildlife.
Through campaigns like “Save from Extinction” and tangible support via merchandise sales, the hope is to foster a deeper connection between Filipinos and the environment, encouraging sustainable choices and active participation in conservation.
