DENR Takes Custody of Cat Spotted on Mt. Pulag
The cat known as “Pugal,” which gained widespread attention after being seen at the summit of Mt. Pulag, is now under the care of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the Cordillera Administrative Region. The agency confirmed this development on Sunday, May 18.
“Pugal is now being taken care of by one of our Pulag Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) staff. A veterinarian is being sent to check on the cat,” a spokesperson shared in a brief post on the official Facebook page of the agency.
Public Interest in the Cat Spotted on Mt. Pulag
Pugal, a white feline with unique orange markings, unexpectedly captured public attention after hikers spotted the cat calmly interacting with climbers amid the cold and foggy conditions at Mt. Pulag’s summit, Luzon’s highest peak. Photos and videos of Pugal quickly circulated on social media, drawing a mix of curiosity and concern.
Several netizens urged the DENR to take action, tagging the agency and expressing worries about the cat’s safety in the mountain’s harsh environment. Despite this, officials have not disclosed details about how Pugal arrived at the mountain or how long the cat had been surviving there.
Community Reactions to Pugal’s Relocation
Animal welfare groups and hikers have welcomed the update, commending the swift response by DENR-CAR. Many expressed relief that the cat is now under professional care and will receive proper medical attention.
On the other hand, some frequent climbers voiced disappointment over Pugal’s removal. They said the cat had become a familiar and beloved presence during their visits to the mountain.
Regardless of differing opinions, the priority remains ensuring Pugal’s well-being and safety. The ongoing veterinary checkup will determine the next steps for the cat’s care.
