Department of Health Urges Caution Amid Leptospirosis Risk

DOH Warns Public About Leptospirosis Risks

The Department of Health has issued a strong warning about leptospirosis as the current downpours linked to Tropical Depression Isang and the enhanced southwest monsoon, known locally as habagat, continue to affect many areas. Officials urge everyone to steer clear of floodwaters, which pose a significant risk for this potentially deadly disease.

In a video statement on Friday, DOH spokesperson and Assistant Secretary Dr. Albert Domingo stressed the importance of avoiding exposure to floodwater. “A reminder to all our countrymen as the rains are getting stronger again and there is a threat of flooding, to avoid floodwater as much as possible. It is dirty and is the source of leptospirosis,” he said. He also cautioned, “Prohibit and prevent children from playing in floodwaters.”

Protecting Yourself and Your Family

Dr. Domingo advised that anyone who has come into contact with floodwater should immediately wash their bodies thoroughly with clean water and soap. He added that visiting health centers or the dedicated lepto-fast lane in DOH hospitals for proper evaluation and possible prophylaxis is crucial, regardless of whether symptoms have appeared.

“Remember, if there is no flood, there is no leptospirosis. Let’s avoid it,” Domingo emphasized, highlighting the simple but vital preventive step of avoiding floodwaters altogether.

Current Weather Conditions and Flood Impact

On the same day, heavy rains caused by Tropical Depression Isang and the habagat led to flooding in several parts of Metro Manila, submerging numerous roads and disrupting daily life. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported that sixteen areas in Luzon remain under Signal No. 1 alert due to the tropical depression’s effects.

Isang was last tracked near Maddela, Quirino, moving with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching up to 90 kph, officials reported. These conditions are expected to continue, making the public’s adherence to safety advice essential.

Community Precautions and Health Advisory

Local leaders and health officials continue to remind communities to stay vigilant and take proactive measures to reduce leptospirosis risks. Avoiding contact with floodwater, maintaining proper hygiene, and seeking timely medical attention can prevent severe health complications linked to the disease.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and comply with safety protocols issued by authorities to safeguard their health during this rainy season.
