DepEd Ramps Up Support for Schools Affected by Heavy Rains

The Department of Education (DepEd) has launched immediate aid efforts for schools impacted by recent typhoons and the persistent southwest monsoon. DepEd has prioritized helping communities recover swiftly to maintain uninterrupted education.

Education Sec. Sonny Angara personally led the distribution of relief goods in several affected areas, emphasizing the department’s commitment. “Hindi namin iiwan ang mga paaralan, guro, at estudyante sa gitna ng kalamidad. Gagawin namin ang lahat para mabilis silang makabangon at magpatuloy sa pag-aaral,” Angara stated.

Emergency Funds and Repairs Underway

The DepEd’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) has already begun releasing response funds to support urgent cleanup and repair activities in damaged schools. The department is closely coordinating with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to utilize Quick Response Funds for necessary infrastructure rehabilitation.

Additionally, the National Indemnity Insurance Program (NIIP) stands ready to provide further assistance for school facilities. As of July 23, reports indicate 1,876 classrooms suffered minor damage, 562 major damage, and 531 were completely destroyed. Hygiene facilities have also been affected, with 232 units damaged.

Support for Teachers and Staff Amid Calamities

Teachers and school personnel in declared calamity zones can access DepEd’s Provident Fund loan to ease financial burdens. The department’s Human Resource units are actively assisting with Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) Calamity Loans and processing 30-day Calamity Leave applications for affected employees.

In cases of injuries or fatalities caused by disasters, DepEd reminds its personnel that claims can be filed under the GSIS-issued Group Personal Accident Insurance (GPAI). This policy covers accidental death or dismemberment up to ₱100,000 and provides medical reimbursement up to ₱30,000 for treatment related to accidents.

Ensuring Continuity Amid Crisis

Through coordinated efforts and timely financial support, DepEd aims to minimize disruptions and safeguard the welfare of educators and students alike. Local officials have noted the importance of these measures in ensuring that education continues despite calamity challenges.
