DepEd Institutionalizes School Sports Clubs Nationwide
The Department of Education (DepEd) has mandated the establishment of School Sports Clubs in all public elementary and secondary schools to enhance students’ physical fitness and holistic development. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between health and academic recovery, especially following the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, officials reported.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized that the new program addresses the crucial link between a healthy body and a sharp mind. “When the body is healthier, the mind is clearer. When children are more active, they are more prepared to learn and catch up on any knowledge they missed during the pandemic,” he remarked. The school sports clubs will instill discipline, teamwork, and strength of character—values that are essential beyond the classroom.
Addressing Physical Activity Deficits Among Students
According to local education authorities, many Filipino children and adolescents fall short of the World Health Organization’s recommendation of at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily. This shortfall is largely due to prolonged sedentary periods in classrooms and the shift to remote learning during the pandemic, community members noted.
The School Sports Clubs program, combined with the existing Physical Education curriculum, will offer learners two to three hours of supervised sports activities weekly. This measure is expected to boost physical health and complement academic efforts.
Mandatory Arnis and Inclusive Sports Programs
As part of the initiative, Arnis will become a compulsory sport in public schools nationwide. Other sports will be offered based on student interests, available facilities, and resources, local leaders explained. Furthermore, the program encourages unified sports where students with and without disabilities participate together. This inclusivity aims to foster friendships, reduce bullying, and promote respect among learners.
While the formation of School Sports Clubs is mandatory for public schools, participation remains voluntary and inclusive. Provisions are in place to accommodate learners with disabilities and those enrolled in the Alternative Learning System, officials clarified.
Funding and Support for School Sports Clubs
Funding for the clubs will come from various sources, including DepEd’s annual budget, the Special Education Fund, and school operating expenses. Partnerships with local government units, private organizations, and other stakeholders will also support the initiative, community representatives said.
By institutionalizing School Sports Clubs, DepEd hopes to nurture well-rounded students prepared for both academic success and life’s challenges.
