DepEd to Fast-Track Hiring of 16000 New Teachers by 2025
To address classroom overcrowding and enhance learning environments in public schools, the Department of Education (DepEd) is set to hire 16,000 new teachers by the third quarter of 2025. This move, driven by the directive of President Marcos and supported by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), aims to strengthen the education system ahead of the new school year.
DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara has urged regional and division offices to accelerate the recruitment process, stressing that timely deployment of teachers is essential for a smooth school opening. The 16,000 teaching positions are part of a larger 20,000 new items authorized under the FY 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA), with 80% requested for early release to allow prompt hiring.
Accelerated Recruitment Nationwide
Recruitment efforts began as early as January 2025 in some Schools Division Offices (SDOs), while certain divisions started as early as October 2024 due to a high number of applicants. DepEd has instructed all SDOs to immediately proceed with job postings, hiring, and appointments upon receiving the Notices of Organization, Staffing, and Compensation Action (NOSCA) from DBM regional offices.
These new hires will focus on critical areas such as kindergarten, elementary, and specialized subjects in junior and senior high school. This strategic approach aims to ensure that qualified teachers are deployed where they are most needed, reducing class sizes and improving the quality of education.
Support from Leadership and Budget Authorities
Secretary Angara expressed gratitude for President Marcos’ “firm instruction to prioritize our teachers and learners.” He emphasized, “These new teaching items directly respond to his call to reduce class sizes and lighten the workload of our educators on the ground.”
He also acknowledged DBM Secretary Amenah Pangandaman for the swift release of these new positions, which accelerates the hiring process and helps schools prepare for the upcoming academic year.
Additional Support Staff to Aid Teachers
In line with easing teachers’ non-teaching duties, the DBM has started issuing NOSCAs for 10,000 Administrative Officer II (AO II) positions. These support staff will handle administrative tasks, allowing teachers to dedicate more time to instruction and student engagement.
Improving Student Outcomes through Better Staffing
Expanding the teaching workforce is essential for improving teacher-student ratios and managing class sizes effectively. DepEd plans to closely monitor hiring progress across regions to prevent delays and guarantee schools open fully staffed.
Secretary Angara called on regional and division offices to act swiftly and efficiently, underscoring that the timely deployment of new teachers is critical for a successful school opening.
Guidance for Teacher Applicants
Applicants listed in the new Registry of Qualified Applicants (RQA) for School Year 2025–2026 are advised to coordinate with their respective Schools Division Offices for updates on hiring schedules and document submissions.
