DepEd Commits to Full Cooperation on Laptops Procurement Case
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) announced its full cooperation with the Office of the Ombudsman following an order to file graft and falsification charges. The charges involve former Education Secretary Leonor Briones and other officials linked to the procurement of laptops worth P2.4 billion, described as outdated, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
DepEd confirmed in a statement that it has been officially informed about the Ombudsman’s resolution to file charges. The department emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability in this matter.
“The officials subject of the charges no longer hold any position in or maintain any connection with the Department,” the statement clarified.
Background on the Laptops Procurement Issue
In 2022, the Commission on Audit flagged the purchase of laptops priced at P53,800 each. These laptops were reportedly outdated and overpriced, raising concerns during the shift to distance learning prompted by the pandemic. The laptops were distributed to select teachers to support remote education.
The Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, then led by former Senator Francis Tolentino, conducted several hearings and eventually referred the investigation report to the Ombudsman after its fifth session.
DepEd’s Pledge for Accountability and Assistance
DepEd reiterated its promise to cooperate fully with the Office of the Ombudsman to ensure the case’s swift and fair resolution. The department said it is prepared to provide all necessary documents, information, and assistance to uphold public interest and accountability.
Local sources said the department aims to protect its integrity and support the legal process as the investigation continues.
