DepEd Calls for Stronger School Security Protocols
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) reaffirmed its commitment to protecting student welfare and urged its partners to intensify school security protocols. The call comes amid a recent violent incident that shocked the community.
DepEd condemned the shooting of a Grade 10 student inside a Nueva Ecija school, emphasizing that schools should remain safe havens for learning and growth. “Our schools must be sanctuaries of safety and learning. Any form of violence, especially within or near school grounds, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the agency stated.
Incident Details and Immediate Response
The tragic event unfolded at Sta. Rosa Integrated School in Nueva Ecija, where a female Grade 10 student was shot by her alleged ex-boyfriend inside her classroom. The suspect then turned the gun on himself. Both victims are now in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the head.
DepEd expressed solidarity with the affected students, teachers, and the entire school community. Local leaders noted the swift action of the Nueva Ecija schools division, which coordinated with authorities to address the situation promptly.
Strengthening Security for Safer Schools
In light of this, DepEd called on community partners to reinforce security measures and uphold their shared responsibility to maintain every school as a zone of peace. “We call on our partners in the community to strengthen school security protocols and uphold our shared duty to make every school a zone of peace,” the department added.
Efforts to provide assistance to the victims and prevent similar incidents are ongoing, with DepEd pledging support to affected families and school personnel.
