DFA Secretary Enrique Manalo Meets US Secretary of State
Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet on Monday, June 9, to discuss matters of mutual interest. This important event highlights the ongoing efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties between the Philippines and the United States.
Before departing for his working visit to the US on June 7, Manalo shared details about his busy schedule in New York. He emphasized his commitment to the Philippines’ role as a founding member of the United Nations. “In my official meetings in New York, I will affirm the unwavering commitment of the Philippines, as a founding member of the United Nations, to remain actively engaged in all discussions to support the UN and work with UN member states for global action on pressing challenges of our time,” he said.
Strengthening International Collaboration
Manalo stressed the importance of solidarity anchored in the UN Charter’s principles for international peace and security. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, making global cooperation more vital than ever. “Solidarity around the principles and the common purpose for international peace and security underpinning the UN Charter must prevail especially as the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary this year,” he added.
Aside from his meeting with Secretary Rubio, Manalo is set to deliver the keynote speech at the 127th Philippine Independence Day celebration in New York. The event will be hosted by Antonio Lagdameo, the outgoing Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the UN in New York.
Transition in Philippine UN Representation
Manalo will succeed Lagdameo as the permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, a position he has held during the previous administration. This transition signals continuity in the Philippines’ diplomatic mission and its active role in multilateral discussions.
During his visit, Manalo will also meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on June 11. Moreover, he plans to participate in the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, reinforcing the Philippines’ dedication to human rights issues globally.
Building on Past Diplomatic Engagements
Manalo and Rubio have a history of diplomatic interaction. They held a phone conversation shortly after the inauguration of US President Donald Trump in January and met during the Munich Security Conference in February. These prior engagements set the stage for their upcoming face-to-face meeting.
Before assuming his new role as permanent representative to the UN in New York, Manalo must secure approval from the powerful Commission on Appointments. This procedural step is essential in confirming his appointment and ensuring his leadership continuity in the Philippines’ foreign affairs.
