DILG Chief Halts Jokes After Vice President Criticizes Style

DILG Chief Responds to Vice President’s Criticism

MANILA, Philippines — Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced he will refrain from joking in official communications for now, following criticism from Vice President Sara Duterte about his online messaging approach. The secretary acknowledged the feedback amid widespread attention to his unorthodox style in delivering public announcements.

During an unexpected interview with her father in The Hague, Netherlands, Duterte expressed surprise over the DILG’s social media posts. She emphasized that the agency “has to be professional,” highlighting concerns about the tone used in official advisories.

Casual Messaging Sparks Public Debate

While announcing class and government work suspensions for an upcoming Friday, Remulla stated in Filipino, “Hindi muna ako magbibiro. Pati nga bise presidente pinuna ako.” He added firmly, “Wala nang tawad. Tama ang listahan ko ngayon.”

The DILG chief’s casual and informal announcements amid the southwest monsoon (habagat) stirred mixed reactions online. Some netizens criticized the relaxed tone, arguing that government advisories should maintain formality, especially during emergencies.

Omissions and Apologies in Suspension Announcements

Earlier posts by the DILG sparked controversy when the list of suspended classes and government work did not initially include Cavite and Laguna, despite weather forecasts predicting the monsoon’s impact on these provinces. The department later acknowledged the oversight with a humorous remark, stating they had “dozed off for a bit after being too full from a good meal” before posting the corrected list for Wednesday.

Defending the Messaging Style

Remulla defended his communication style by recalling his time as governor of Cavite, where people were accustomed to his straightforward and informal manner. He insists that his approach helps the public understand the messages clearly.

Moreover, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. voiced support for the DILG secretary, saying he backs Remulla “as long as he gets the message across.” This endorsement underscores the administration’s priority on effective communication, even if it means deviating from traditional formalities.
