DILG Defends Online Messaging Style on Class Suspensions Amid Criticism
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla recently addressed concerns surrounding the agency’s online messaging style on class and work suspensions. The DILG’s casual tone in announcing suspensions sparked backlash from netizens, who found it inappropriate given the ongoing southwest monsoon or habagat.
In one post, the DILG said it had “dozed off for a bit after being too full from a good meal” before listing the areas where classes and government work were suspended. While this informal approach caught the attention of many, Remulla stood by the messaging style, emphasizing that he had no ill intentions.
Remulla Explains His Messaging Approach
During a DZMM interview, Remulla recalled his communication style from his time as governor of Cavite. “They understood me in Cavite. I hope they understand me, too. I have no intention to offend anybody,” he said in Filipino.
He added, “If I have to apologize for hurting their sensibilities, then I do offer it. But I will not change who I am, and I will always try to be my best, especially as a point of information that we need to disseminate.”
Remulla further clarified, “I’m not teaching the wrong things. I’m not cursing. I’m not belittling anyone. That’s just the way people speak in Cavite. That’s just the way I speak.”
Authority to Announce Class Suspensions
According to local sources, the Presidential Communications Office granted Secretary Remulla the authority to announce class suspensions on behalf of the Cabinet and the Palace starting Monday. This move aims to streamline communication during weather disturbances and emergencies.
The DILG’s online presence remains active in providing timely updates despite the mixed reactions to its messaging tone. Officials continue to stress the importance of quickly informing the public about class and work suspensions to ensure safety amid the habagat season.
