DILG Begins Orientation for Newly Elected Local Officials
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is set to start an orientation program for newly elected local officials beginning July 1. This initiative aims to support and empower local leaders as they begin their terms in office.
The DILG’s Newly Elected Officials Performing Leadership for Uplifting Service (NEO PLUS) program will guide these officials through their transition with essential training and support. Local government units (LGUs) will receive executive briefings led by DILG field officers and transition teams to help smooth the leadership handover.
Setting Priorities for the First 100 Days
These executive briefings will focus on helping new leaders set clear priorities for their first 100 days in office. The program emphasizes a strategic approach to leadership, encouraging officials to plan effectively from the outset. “These sessions aim to ensure a smooth transition and provide a strong foundation for good governance,” local leaders noted.
Besides the briefings, the DILG will offer a comprehensive course called “Strategic Leadership for Good Governance” tailored for newly elected officials. Returning officials will also benefit from a refresher course on “Transformative Leadership for Elevated Governance” to reinforce best practices.
Three-Phase Program to Strengthen Local Governance
The department explained that the NEO PLUS program will unfold in three phases over the next three years, aiming to build the capacity of local officials to govern effectively and responsibly. This long-term effort is designed to foster sustainable improvements in leadership and public service delivery.
Local officials who have joined previous sessions praised the program’s thorough approach to leadership development. “The training helped us understand our roles better and equipped us with tools to address community needs,” said a participant in the prior cohort.
Encouraging Participation and Commitment
The DILG encourages all newly elected local officials to actively participate in the program. By engaging in these learning opportunities, officials can enhance their skills and better serve their constituents with transparency and accountability.
As the NEO PLUS program rolls out, it aims to build a network of competent and visionary local leaders dedicated to uplifting public service. The department’s efforts highlight the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in governance.
