DILG Emphasizes Student Safety in Class Suspension
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) continues to prioritize the safety and protection of students when deciding on class suspensions. Officials reported that safeguarding students and ensuring uninterrupted education are complementary objectives that the agency strives to achieve simultaneously.
“Protecting students and preserving their right to education are not opposing goals. They go hand in hand. Timely decisions save lives, while coordination and preparedness ensure that learning continues,” community members noted in a recent statement.
Authority to Suspend Classes and Work
Since July, the DILG has held the authority to suspend classes and government work in response to safety concerns. The agency exercised this power most recently on Monday, September 1, although the announcement came only on the morning of the suspension day.
DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla acknowledged the delay in the announcement. He explained that the weather conditions shifted overnight while he was resting, which influenced the timing of the decision.
Data-Driven Decisions Based on NDRRMC
The DILG underscored that all class suspension announcements rely heavily on data and recommendations from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). Officials reported that the department’s role is to implement these recommendations in close coordination with local government units.
“The role of the DILG and the SILG is to communicate and implement these recommendations in coordination with local governments,” local leaders noted.
Collaboration to Balance Safety and Learning
The DILG remains ready to work alongside the Department of Education (DepEd), local government units (LGUs), and private educational institutions. Their goal is to strike a balance between ensuring student safety and maintaining continuity in learning.
They also highlighted that shifting to online classes remains a viable alternative during periods when in-person sessions are suspended. This flexibility helps minimize disruption to students’ education while prioritizing their protection.
