DILG Proposes Police Vehicle Boost for Every Purchase
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) recently proposed a new policy to enhance police resources across Metro Manila. DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla suggested that for every police vehicle a local government unit in the National Capital Region (NCR) acquires, an additional vehicle should be provided by the department. This move aims to address the ongoing gap in police transportation resources and improve police response times.
During the latest meeting of the NCR Regional Peace and Order Council, Secretary Remulla emphasized the need to implement the “buy one, get one” approach. “What I am proposing is we go back-to-back. You buy one, we give you one,” he stated. This proposal directly tackles the stark disparity in police vehicle distribution in the region.
Addressing Disparities in Police Vehicles
Remulla pointed out that Metro Manila, home to over 14 million residents, currently has only 635 police vehicles. In contrast, Cavite, with a population of around 4.5 million, possesses 801 police vehicles. “This has to be corrected,” he added, stressing the importance of equitable resource allocation to ensure public safety.
To supplement this, the DILG plans to procure more police motorcycles and smaller fire trucks. These smaller vehicles will allow easier access in densely populated urban areas, where larger vehicles might struggle to navigate quickly.
Commitment to Improving Police Response
Earlier, during a command conference with the Philippine National Police (PNP) last June, Secretary Remulla committed to increasing the number of police patrol vehicles. This commitment aligns with the directive from PNP Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III, who ordered police units to respond to emergencies within five minutes.
The combined efforts aim to enhance the police force’s ability to react rapidly to emergencies and provide better assistance to the public. Local authorities have welcomed these plans, recognizing the urgent need to upgrade and expand police mobility in the NCR.
