DILG Advances Barangays Using Digital Information System
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is intensifying efforts to boost barangays’ adoption of its digital information system. This move aims to modernize local governance and improve public service delivery nationwide.
Among the country’s 42,011 barangays, 11,658 have already undergone orientation on the Barangay Information Management System (BIMS). Meanwhile, 7,083 barangays have been granted full access to the platform, according to government sources.
“The Department targets to increase these numbers significantly in 2025,” officials said, emphasizing their commitment to expanding digital tools across grassroots communities.
Empowering Barangays Through Digital Innovation
The BIMS initiative forms part of a broader DILG program to strengthen local governance via digital innovation. It equips barangays with advanced tools to enhance transparency, operational efficiency, and service delivery to residents.
Local leaders noted that digital platforms like BIMS streamline data collection and communication, enabling barangay officials to respond quickly and effectively to community needs.
However, authorities also stressed the importance of adhering to data privacy and digital security protocols to protect sensitive information while using the system.
Centralized Data for Better Governance
The Barangay Information Management System serves as a centralized hub for collecting and managing barangay data. This includes individual and household profiles, as well as tracking complaints and inquiries.
Developed under the DILG’s Local Government Unit Support System, BIMS aims to unify barangay data handling, providing easier access to accurate and up-to-date information.
As local officials embrace this platform, residents can expect more responsive governance and improved access to essential services.
