DILG Calls for Forced Evacuation Due to Habagat
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has urged local government units (LGUs) to carry out forced evacuation amid the rising threat of the southwest monsoon, locally called habagat. This move aims to protect residents as heavy rains continue to batter Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
According to weather authorities, over 200 millimeters of rainfall is expected to pour over Metro Manila and five adjacent provinces until Wednesday noon. Given this forecast, the DILG emphasized the urgency of forced evacuation to safeguard vulnerable communities.
Secretary Remulla Highlights Safety Priorities
In an official statement, DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla urged local leaders to prioritize the safety of residents, especially children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. He stressed, “Local chief executives must implement forced evacuation when necessary to ensure the safety and protection of affected residents.”
To support these efforts, the DILG has directed the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to assist in evacuation operations. Both agencies, which fall under the department’s jurisdiction, will help coordinate and facilitate the safe relocation of residents.
Coordination with Disaster and Welfare Agencies
Secretary Remulla also instructed LGUs to work closely with their Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils. In addition, coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development is essential to ensure timely distribution of relief goods provided by the national government.
Local leaders noted that these combined efforts are crucial to handle the challenges brought by the habagat and to minimize risks to life and property. As the heavy rains persist, authorities remain on high alert and continue monitoring the situation.
