DILG Urges LGUs to Boost Dengue Prevention Amid Rising Cases

DILG Calls for Stronger Dengue Prevention Efforts

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has directed local government units (LGUs) to intensify dengue prevention amid rising cases. Recent typhoons and widespread flooding have created favorable conditions for mosquito breeding, increasing the risk of dengue outbreaks nationwide.

Officials reported that the DILG’s Memorandum Circular 2025-011 requires LGUs to implement community-wide interventions to curb the spread of dengue. These measures include clean-up drives aimed at eliminating mosquito breeding sites, search-and-destroy operations to remove stagnant water from households and public areas, and regular clearing of canals and drainage systems to prevent water accumulation and flooding.

Integrating Dengue Prevention into Disaster Response

The circular also emphasizes the importance of incorporating dengue prevention strategies into disaster response activities. Flood-affected areas, especially those impacted by typhoons, tend to have higher mosquito populations, making this integration essential.

“During this season of floods and typhoons, our communities become even more vulnerable to dengue. Simple stagnant water, tires, or containers can serve as mosquito breeding grounds. That’s why collective action from barangays and the community is essential to keep our families safe,” a DILG statement said in Filipino on Monday.

Allocating Resources for Vector Control

Local leaders noted that the DILG urges LGUs to allocate both financial and logistical resources for vector control. This includes purchasing larvicides and insecticides and mobilizing barangay health workers and volunteers to conduct outreach and information campaigns.

Community members said that these efforts are vital for reducing mosquito populations and preventing disease transmission. The public is also encouraged to maintain cleanliness around their homes and seek immediate medical care if dengue symptoms appear.

Community Participation Remains Crucial

The success of dengue prevention depends heavily on the cooperation of families and communities. Keeping surroundings free of stagnant water and containers helps eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. Officials reported that combined efforts between local governments and residents can significantly reduce the threat of dengue.
