Dinagat Islands Distributes Coconut Seedlings to Farmers
BUTUAN CITY — The provincial government of Dinagat Islands, in collaboration with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), has launched a major distribution of coconut seedlings to local farmers. This massive effort aims to provide 59,972 seedlings to 586 coconut farmers across seven towns in the province.
Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. emphasized that the distribution is part of the government’s Massive Coconut Planting and Replanting Program, designed to boost coconut production and support farmers affected by natural disasters. “The distribution of coconut seedlings is under the government’s Massive Coconut Planting and Replanting Program under the Coconut-based Agroforestry Project,” he stated.
Steady Progress in Seedling Distribution
Last week, the province distributed nearly 20,713 coconut seedlings to 242 farmers in three towns, showing steady progress in the program’s implementation. The provincial government is committed to completing the distribution as part of the total allocation of 400,000 seedlings, valued at around P20 million, set for this year.
Local officials acknowledged the crucial support from various government agencies, particularly the Department of Agriculture and the PCA, which have been instrumental in ensuring the program’s success.
Helping Farmers Recover from Typhoon Odette
Coconut farmers in Dinagat Islands were severely impacted by Super Typhoon Odette in 2021, which uprooted thousands of coconut trees and damaged plantations. The massive seedling distribution is a vital step toward helping these farmers recover their livelihoods and restore the province’s coconut industry.
The provincial government remains dedicated to supporting farmers through this recovery phase, aiming to rebuild and strengthen local agriculture for sustainable growth.
