Discounted Beep Cards Rollout in Metro Rail Lines
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announced that starting in September, discounted Beep cards for students, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and senior citizens will be available at all Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations. This new initiative aims to provide a 50 percent fare discount for these eligible groups across MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2 lines.
Officials reported that the 50 percent discount will be automatically programmed into special Beep cards, streamlining the process for riders. This move is expected to enhance convenience and accessibility for commuters who qualify for the reduced fares.
Easy Access and Renewal Process for Students
During an inspection at the LRT-2 Antipolo Station, sources said Secretary Dizon explained how students can obtain their discounted Beep cards. “If you are a student, you will go to any station in September, you will show your ID, and right then and there, your Beep card will be printed in every station on MRT-3 and LRT-1 and LRT-2, one time,” he stated in Filipino.
Community members noted that the student Beep cards are valid for one school year only. After this period, students must return to any station to present their updated school ID to renew or reactivate their cards for continued discounted access. “Meaning, after one year, it won’t work anymore. So you have to come back, and you have to show your student ID again for the next year so you can get another student beep card while you’re still a student,” Dizon clarified.
Special Beep Cards for PWDs and Senior Citizens
Local leaders reported that PWDs and senior citizens can also avail themselves of the discounted fares by presenting their respective identification cards. Unlike student cards, their special Beep cards do not require annual renewal. This ensures uninterrupted access to discounted fares without the need for repeated verification.
Every station across the MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2 networks will feature a dedicated window for printing these special Beep cards, making it easier for commuters to claim their discounts promptly.
No More Paperwork Required
In a significant improvement, officials confirmed that senior citizens, PWDs, and students no longer need to fill out any forms to receive the 50 percent discount at the MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2 lines. “Starting today, in all the lines, LRT-1, LRT-2, MRT-3, there is no need to fill out forms, they will just show their IDs, senior citizen, PWD, and student IDs,” sources said.
This simplification aims to reduce wait times and enhance the overall commuting experience for eligible passengers.
