The condition of Kikiam, the dog who was violently thrown to the ground by a drunk man in Pasig, is steadily improving but remains under close observation. The Barangay Santolan Animal Control Team shared this update on Friday, May 16, emphasizing the ongoing monitoring of the dog’s leg injury.
“Base sa koordinasyon sa pagitan ng barangay at ng pet owner, amin pong ibinabalita na patuloy na bumubuti ang kalagayan ni Kikiam ngunit under observation pa rin ito, at binabantayan ang paghilom ng kanyang injury sa paa,” the team said, highlighting the importance of collaboration between local authorities and the pet owner.
Details of the Incident and Immediate Response
The dog abuse case in Pasig unfolded when an intoxicated man, wearing a black shirt, was captured on video throwing Kikiam forcefully to the ground in Barangay Santolan on May 13. The distressing footage showed the dog yelping in pain as a result of the assault.
Witnesses reported that the suspect was drunk and causing a disturbance before the incident. Contrary to the suspect’s claim that Kikiam bit him first, the dog’s owner insisted that the man initially hit and kicked the dog.
Authorities reacted swiftly. The Barangay Santolan Animal Control Team, led by Barangay Councilor Dale Abugadie, coordinated with local police units to address the situation immediately. On May 14, Kikiam was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic for urgent medical treatment.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
Support for Kikiam extended beyond medical care. Representatives from the Philippine Society for the Humane Treatment of Animals, Inc. (Humane Philippines) assisted the pet owner in filing an official complaint at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Headquarters. As of May 16, the PNP Investigation Section is actively probing the case.
A manhunt operation has been launched to apprehend the suspect responsible for this dog abuse case in Pasig. Authorities are determined to ensure justice is served under the Animal Welfare Act and local ordinances such as the Pasig Veterinary Code and Barangay Santolan’s pet ownership regulations.
Community Support and Commitment to Animal Welfare
The Barangay Santolan Animal Control Team expressed deep gratitude to all individuals and groups who have supported their efforts, including advocacy organizations like the Santolan Animal Welfare Society (SAWS), Humane Philippines, and the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).
The team reaffirmed its dedication to protecting animal rights and ensuring that violators of animal welfare laws face appropriate consequences. They also encouraged residents to report any concerns regarding animal welfare directly to the Barangay Santolan Animal Control Team.
