DOJ Moves to Cancel Harry Roque Passport
The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Thursday, May 22, its plan to seek the cancellation of former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque’s passport following the issuance of an arrest warrant against him. This development is linked to serious criminal charges. “We will do that and once his passport is cancelled, he will be an undocumented alien,” said a senior DOJ official familiar with the case.
Roque faces non-bailable charges of qualified human trafficking. The Angeles City regional trial court issued an arrest order against him and his co-accused. The charges stem from alleged illegal activities related to Lucky South 99, a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) based in Porac, Pampanga, which authorities have already shut down.
Implications of Passport Cancellation and Asylum Application
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla explained the consequences of the passport cancellation: “’Pag wala siyang asylum at nakansel ang passport niya (When he fails to secure asylum and his passport gets cancelled), he will have to be deported.” The lawyer has reportedly applied for asylum in the Netherlands, though the application remains pending.
Officials acknowledge that the asylum request must be addressed before any deportation process can proceed. However, confidence remains that the Netherlands will not tolerate the crimes Roque is accused of committing.
Interpol Red Notice and International Cooperation
Alongside the passport cancellation, the DOJ intends to request the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to issue a red notice. This notice would call on foreign governments to arrest Roque and extradite him back to Philippine custody.
This international move highlights the seriousness of the charges and the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law beyond national borders.
Background of the Human Trafficking Case
The qualified human trafficking charges involve the alleged exploitation tied to Lucky South 99’s operations. This POGO facility was reportedly engaged in activities that violated Philippine laws, leading to its closure by the government.
Authorities continue to investigate the matter thoroughly, emphasizing that accountability will be pursued regardless of the accused’s current status or location.
