DOJ Commits to Pursuing Filipino Fugitives Abroad
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has firmly pledged to intensify its efforts in tracking and repatriating Filipino fugitives abroad. This commitment was emphasized by a top official who stated, “Hindi ho kami tumitigil. Hindi ho tumitigil ang trabaho ng DOJ.” This declaration highlights the DOJ’s unwavering dedication to justice and accountability.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the DOJ considers this pursuit essential for delivering justice to the Filipino people. “Ito po’y pangangailangan ng taumbayan na magkaroon ng hustisya para naman ang bansa mismo na minamahal nila ay magmamahal din sa kanila,” the official added, underscoring the reciprocal bond between the nation and its citizens.
Recent Arrest of Former Lawmaker in Timor-Leste
The commitment came to the forefront after the arrest of former Negros Oriental 3rd District representative Arnolfo A. Teves Jr. by immigration authorities in Timor-Leste on the night of May 27. Teves was apprehended as an undocumented alien following the cancellation of his passport by a Manila trial court. He faces multiple murder charges and other serious criminal accusations.
Officials expect Teves to be repatriated soon to face justice in the Philippines. “Ang mahalaga po ‘yung mga pamilya na nawalan po ng mga mahal sa buhay ay magkaroon ng hustisya,” the DOJ representative said, highlighting the importance of justice for victims’ families.
Other Fugitives and Ongoing Efforts
Among the fugitives sought by the DOJ is former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, who has applied for asylum in the Netherlands. The DOJ has requested the cancellation of Roque’s passport after warrants were issued by the Angeles City Regional Trial Court for his arrest in connection with non-bailable qualified human trafficking charges.
These charges stem from his alleged involvement with Lucky South 99, a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) based in Porac, Pampanga, which the government has since shut down. Roque left the country last year before charges were formally filed, and his asylum case remains pending.
DOJ’s Ongoing Pursuit of Justice
Reports indicate that the DOJ will continue its relentless chase of Filipino fugitives abroad, reaffirming the department’s vow not to stop until justice is served. The pursuit of these fugitives is seen as a critical step in upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of victims and their families.
