DOLE Strengthens Programs for Unemployed Filipinos
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is set to boost its youth and adult employability and employment facilitation programs to offer more opportunities for the remaining 4 percent of unemployed Filipinos. This initiative aims to support those still seeking work in the country’s evolving labor market.
According to recent data, the unemployment rate in the Philippines declined to 3.7 percent in June from 3.9 percent in May. This means 1.95 million Filipinos were jobless last month, a drop from 2.03 million the previous month. Alongside this, the employment rate increased to 96.3 percent in June, reflecting 185,000 more individuals finding jobs within just a month.
Labor Market Trends and Sector Growth
DOLE highlighted that the improving labor market is largely driven by growth in the industry sector. Key subsectors like wholesale and retail trade, fishing and aquaculture, and construction have contributed significantly to this positive trend.
Additionally, the number of underemployed workers fell sharply by 840,000, from 6.6 million in May to 5.76 million in June. This decline results from a rise in full-time employment by 1.7 million and a decrease in part-time roles by nearly 878,000 month-on-month.
Comprehensive Efforts to Address Unemployment
In line with the mandate from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to create more opportunities for the remaining unemployed, DOLE will implement a whole-of-nation strategy focused on convergence, innovation, and accessibility. This approach aims to ensure no Filipino is left behind in the workforce.
Part of this effort includes enhancing the labor market information system. The PhilJobNet online portal will be upgraded to offer real-time, verified job postings, making it easier for job seekers to find suitable positions.
Expanding Partnerships and Programs
DOLE plans to strengthen ties with Public Employment Service Offices, government agencies, the private sector, and other stakeholders. This collaboration will expand the reach of job fairs and employment services throughout the country.
Moreover, the department will scale up pre-employment and internship initiatives such as the Special Program for the Employment of Students, the Government Internship Program, and Jobstart Philippines. These programs focus on supporting students and first-time job seekers as they prepare for the workforce.
Skills Training and Scholarship Support
DOLE’s attached agency, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), will increase and broaden its scholarship programs. The goal is to ensure that every Filipino family has at least one member who completes a TESDA course, guaranteeing better employability.
These combined efforts reflect a strong commitment to addressing unemployment and underemployment in the Philippines. By enhancing training, improving job matching, and fostering partnerships, DOLE aims to create a more inclusive and resilient labor market.
