Tragedy struck at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 as an SUV crashed into the departure area, claiming the lives of two individuals. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has confirmed that the driver will undergo a drug test as part of a thorough investigation.
Alongside the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and law enforcement agencies, DOTr will meticulously review CCTV footage to uncover the full story behind the fatal incident. Early findings suggest that the driver had no premeditated intent to harm anyone.
According to DOTr’s initial assessment, CCTV footage reveals the SUV driver was merely dropping off a passenger when the accident occurred, dispelling notions of a deliberate attack. However, investigators continue to piece together what truly happened.
The devastating crash took the life of a five-year-old child and a 29-year-old man. Four others were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. In light of this tragedy, DOTr appeals to the public to respect the victims’ families by refraining from sharing photos or videos on social media.
Meanwhile, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) swiftly acted, imposing a 90-day preventive suspension on the driver’s license. The LTO also issued a show cause order to both the driver and the vehicle’s registered owner.
Reports reveal the driver told authorities he was about to exit the departure area after dropping off a passenger when another vehicle suddenly cut in front of him. Panicked, he accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes, triggering the fatal crash.
This heartbreaking incident has reignited calls for stronger safety measures on public roads. Senator Grace Poe, vice chair of the Senate public services committee, urges the creation of a Philippine Transportation Safety Board. She envisions a single dedicated agency to handle all transportation accident investigations across air, land, sea, railways, and pipelines.
“Many accidents can be prevented with proactive steps,” Poe emphasized, highlighting the urgent need to protect Filipino commuters everywhere.
As the investigation continues, the nation watches closely for justice and answers in the tragic NAIA crash.
