DOTr Orders Removal of Airport Officers Involved in Extortion
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has taken swift action by ordering the removal of five airport police officers linked to an extortion scheme targeting taxi drivers at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia). This decisive move aims to restore trust and ensure a safer environment for both drivers and passengers.
Transport Secretary Vince Dizon revealed that these officers will face suspension immediately, followed by termination proceedings. “We will have them suspended. Afterward, we will have immediate proceedings for their termination,” said Dizon, emphasizing the department’s zero-tolerance stance against corruption.
The directive came after a taxi driver reported being forced to give up 40 percent of their earnings to these officers under threats of arrest or denial of airport entry. This abusive practice not only hurts drivers but also negatively impacts tourism, which Secretary Dizon highlighted as a serious concern.
Investigation Launched to Confirm Extortion Claims
Dizon has also instructed the Manila International Airport Authority to thoroughly investigate the allegations. The department is committed to uncovering the full extent of the scheme and ensuring that justice is served.
This incident follows a recent case where the DOTr suspended a taxi driver’s license for overcharging a passenger P1,200 during a transfer between Naia terminals. These measures reflect ongoing efforts to regulate airport transport services and protect commuters.
“This has a big effect on our tourism,” Dizon stressed, underscoring the broader implications of such corrupt practices on the country’s image and economy.
