DOTr Orders Vendors Out of MRT-3 Walkways
Transportation authorities have issued a directive to clear vendors from the northbound and southbound walkways of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3). This move aims to reduce passenger congestion and improve pedestrian flow along the busy rail line.
During a recent inspection of MRT-3 stations, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized the need to remove these obstructions. Officials reported that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) will collaborate closely with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to ensure the walkways are cleared promptly.
Balancing Livelihood and Public Safety
Secretary Dizon acknowledged the plight of the vendors, noting, “Naiintindihan naman natin sila at nakaka-awa rin dahil kailangan nilang maghanap buhay, pero they cannot be here.” Community members echoed this sentiment, recognizing the vendors’ need to earn a living yet highlighting the importance of keeping pedestrian pathways free from blockages.
He further explained that these vendors contribute to overcrowding, which not only inconveniences passengers but also creates safety concerns. Local leaders stressed the importance of prioritizing smooth movement for commuters and pedestrians alike to maintain an efficient transit system.
Addressing Unauthorized Charges Near MRT-3
In addition to clearing vendors, Secretary Dizon criticized the practice of charging fees to these sellers near the MRT-3 southbound exit. Officials reported that a nearby mall has been collecting rent from vendors operating in this prohibited area, which is government property.
“First of all, it’s not allowed there. They shouldn’t be blocking pedestrian pathways. And why is Metro Point charging fees there? That’s government property. We’ll have those vendors removed,” Dizon stated firmly, underscoring the government’s commitment to reclaim public spaces for commuters.
Presidential Directive Supports Clear Walkways
This order aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to eliminate obstructions along pedestrian routes in transit areas. According to transportation officials, the goal is to maintain the smooth and efficient flow of passengers across the rail lines, enhancing overall commuter experience.
Efforts to clear the MRT-3 walkways are underway, with the DOTr and MMDA coordinating to enforce this policy while considering the welfare of displaced vendors. Community members hope for sustainable solutions that will balance public order and livelihood support.
