DOTr to Publish Names of Traffic Violators Weekly
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced a bold new measure to enhance road discipline by publicly releasing the names of traffic violators. This initiative aims to hold drivers accountable and foster safer driving habits across the country.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon revealed during a press briefing that the department is set to launch a weekly publication called the “Do Not Imitate” or “Do Not Follow” list. This move is part of the DOTr’s broader effort to curb reckless driving and improve traffic conditions nationwide, local officials reported.
Shaming as a Deterrent to Traffic Violations
Secretary Dizon stressed the importance of this new approach, especially for those drivers who disregard fines and legal consequences. “If you’re not afraid of cases or fines, then maybe this will make you feel ashamed. I’m serious about this. If you don’t want to end up on that list once we implement it, then you’d better start behaving,” he said in Filipino.
Community leaders noted that publicizing violators’ names could serve as a social deterrent, encouraging drivers to follow traffic rules more strictly. This initiative follows a recent severe traffic violation that led to the permanent revocation of a driver’s license, highlighting the government’s commitment to stricter enforcement.
Implementation and Oversight
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is currently reviewing the logistics and legal framework needed to execute this plan effectively. LTO Chief Vigor Mendoza is spearheading the evaluation process to ensure the initiative is both fair and impactful, sources said.
By making traffic offenses more visible to the public, the DOTr hopes to instill a sense of responsibility among motorists and reduce the frequency of dangerous driving behaviors on Philippine roads.
Looking Ahead
Officials are optimistic that the publication of traffic violators’ names will complement existing penalties and foster a culture of respect for road regulations. This proactive approach aims to protect lives and ease traffic congestion by promoting safer driving habits nationwide.
