DPWH Takes Strong Actions Against Corruption
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has recently taken decisive action by dismissing former Bulacan First District engineer Henry Alcantara from service. This move is part of the department’s intensified efforts to address corruption and irregularities within its ranks. New DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed the dismissal, emphasizing the significance of accountability in government projects.
“Henry Alcantara, effective today, is dismissed from the [DPWH]. He was suspended. He is now dismissed,” officials reported, highlighting the department’s zero-tolerance stance toward misconduct.
Contractors Face Lifetime Blacklisting Over Fraudulent Flood Projects
In a related development, Secretary Dizon announced the lifetime blacklisting of two contractors, Wawao Builders and Syms Construction Trading. These firms are implicated in so-called “ghost” flood control projects, which have raised serious concerns about fund misuse and project authenticity.
During his inspection of the flood control project site in Barangay Sipat, Plaridel, Bulacan, Dizon exposed Wawao Builders as the contractor behind a suspicious project valued at P96 million. Community members noted the absence of actual flood control structures, labeling the endeavor a ghost project.
Resignation of PCAB Executive Director
Meanwhile, the Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB) experienced a leadership change when Executive Director Lawyer Herbert Matienzo resigned citing personal reasons. Trade Secretary Cristina Roque confirmed the resignation, which took effect on Wednesday.
Local leaders acknowledged Matienzo’s departure as a notable shift within the construction oversight body, which plays a crucial role in accrediting contractors nationwide.
Government’s Renewed Commitment to Transparency
These developments reflect the DPWH’s renewed commitment to transparency and integrity in public infrastructure projects. Officials reported that further investigations and audits are underway to prevent similar abuses and ensure public funds are used responsibly.
Secretary Dizon’s firm actions send a clear message that corruption and fraudulent activities will not be tolerated in flood control and other infrastructure projects.
