DPWH District Engineer Arrested for Attempted Bribe in Batangas
A Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) district engineer was arrested last week in Taal, Batangas, for allegedly trying to bribe Batangas 1st District Rep. Leandro Leviste. The official reportedly offered over P3.1 million to halt the lawmaker’s probe into possible irregularities within the province’s infrastructure projects.
Authorities identified the 51-year-old engineer, known by the alias “Abe,” who was apprehended in Barangay Poblacion around 7:45 p.m. on August 22. The incident has drawn significant attention due to the gravity of the accusations linked to public funds.
Details of the Alleged Bribery Attempt
Investigations revealed that “Abe” offered exactly P3,126,900 to Representative Leviste on the day of his arrest. The money was intended to dissuade the congressman from pursuing his inquiry into alleged anomalies in DPWH-led projects in Batangas’ first district, community members reported.
Local officials stated that the police conducted a carefully planned entrapment operation, which ultimately led to the district engineer’s arrest. The authorities recovered the alleged bribe money from the suspect during the operation.
Legal Actions and Charges
The suspect is currently detained under the custody of the Taal police. He is set to face charges for violating Article 212 of the Revised Penal Code, which addresses corruption of public officials, as well as Republic Act No. 3019, known as the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, sources said.
This case highlights ongoing efforts to address corruption within government agencies, especially in critical infrastructure projects affecting local communities.
