Driver Licenses Suspended After Fatal Laguna Road Crash
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced the suspension of driver licenses following a deadly accident in San Pablo, Laguna. The bus and sports utility vehicle (SUV) drivers involved in the crash now face serious consequences after the incident.
The collision happened when a JAC bus, driven by Jose Bo Calisura, crashed into a Mitsubishi Montero SUV, driven by Leo Penales. The accident took place at the intersection of Maharlika Highway Corner 7 Up Road and Soledad Santisimo Road in Barangay San Francisco, San Pablo City. This dangerous encounter led to tragic results.
Fatalities and Injuries Reported
According to local authorities from the Calabarzon Police Regional Office, three passengers inside the SUV died due to the crash. Several others, including the SUV driver, suffered serious injuries. Meanwhile, four passengers on the bus, including a one-year-old child, sustained minor wounds and were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Regulatory Actions Taken by Authorities
The DOTr stated that the Land Transportation Office (LTO) has ordered both the SUV driver and the JAC bus owner to provide explanations as to why their vehicle registrations should not be canceled. On the other hand, the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) issued a show-cause order to the bus operator and its driver, demanding justification to avoid suspension of their franchise.
DOTr’s Firm Stance on Reckless Driving
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon expressed a strong warning against negligence on the roads. “We will not contemplate canceling your license and franchise if you continue to neglect your responsibilities on the road and put the lives of our constituents in danger,” he said. This statement reflects the government’s commitment to safety and accountability.
The recent incident underscores the importance of responsible driving and strict enforcement of traffic regulations. Authorities continue to investigate the crash and urge all drivers to prioritize public safety.
