Authorities released the SUV driver who lost control and damaged other vehicles after settling with the victims.
In Raffy Tima’s Wednesday report on “24 Oras,” video showed a police officer talking to the driver before it sped in reverse.
This video was among those of the SUV that went viral online.
The Quezon City District Traffic Enforcement Unit clarified that the driver did not attempt to escape.
“Nung kinausap siya ng imbestigador, ang sabi niya apakan niya lang, so parang panic attack yung nangyari sa kanya. Parang may medical condition po siya,” said Police Lieutenant Colonel Joseluis Aguirre, Quezon City District Traffic Enforcement Unit chief.
(The driver was talking to the police when he seemed to have a panic attack. It seems like he has a medical condition.)
He added that the police was reaching for the car keys as he told the driver to shut down the SUV, but the driver stepped on the accelerator until the vehicle reversed.
The SUV driver was a 68-year-old retired member of the US Navy. He said he will shoulder the expenses of the damaged vehicles and property.
He is in good condition, according to the police.
The charges of reckless imprudence resulting in damage to properties will not be pursued.
The police reminded the public, especially those traveling for the holy week, to not only ensure that vehicles are in good condition but also ensure the well-being of the driver. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
