Driver’s License Suspended for Changing License Plates at NLEX

Authorities have suspended the driver’s license of a vehicle owner caught changing license plates at the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX). The Department of Transportation (DOTr) confirmed the 90-day suspension following the viral spread of a video showing the incident.

The video was posted on social media by the Facebook page Parkeserye on August 15, 2025. It revealed a person switching the plates of a Toyota Hilux Tamaraw 2.4, originally bearing Plate No. CCP 2849, to a Temporary Plate No. AC 137B while at a gasoline station along NLEX.

DOTr Issues Show Cause Order

In a statement released on Sunday, DOTr officials reported that a show cause order was issued to the driver. The order requires the individual to explain why they should not face charges for violating the Use of Number Plates provision under the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.

Furthermore, the driver must justify why their license should not be revoked or suspended for being classified as an Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle. “Upon verification, it appears that the Toyota Hilux Tamaraw 2.4 with Plate No. CCP 2849 and Temporary Plate No. AC 137B pertains to the same motor vehicle registered under the same owner,” the order stated.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

The show cause order warned that failure to appear for the scheduled hearing or to submit a written explanation would be seen as waiving the right to be heard. In such cases, the decision will be based solely on the available evidence.

The driver was instructed to surrender their driver’s license on August 22, 2025, during the hearing at the Land Transportation Office (LTO). Community members noted that this step is part of the process to ensure accountability.

Vehicle Placed Under Alarm Status

To prevent any unauthorized transactions involving the vehicle during the investigation, officials confirmed that the Toyota Hilux is now flagged with an alarm status. This measure restricts any sale or transfer of ownership until the case is resolved.

Local leaders emphasized that such enforcement actions reinforce the importance of compliance with traffic regulations and vehicle registration laws. They urged motorists to adhere strictly to legal standards to avoid similar penalties.
