DSWD’s Swift Relief Effort Amid Flood Crisis
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has mobilized P32 million worth of relief assistance to local governments affected by the heavy rains and flooding in Mindanao and parts of the Visayas. This rapid response aims to ease the burden on communities hit by persistent downpours linked to the Intertropical Convergence Zone.
Since May 15, this weather system has triggered severe flooding and landslides across Mindanao, with Iloilo City also experiencing significant flooding on May 27. The department’s quick deployment of aid includes essential food and non-food items to support families in need.
Impact of Flooding on Communities
Reports indicate that approximately 107,700 families, or 334,579 individuals, across 254 barangays in Western Visayas and various Mindanao regions have been affected. The widespread damage has prompted an urgent need for assistance as many residents face displacement and hardship.
DSWD’s Ongoing Operations and Coordination
Department officials are working tirelessly to ensure timely delivery of relief goods, following directives to provide immediate support to the most vulnerable areas. Personnel reached flood-affected barangays in Jaro, Iloilo City, within 24 hours of the flooding, demonstrating the department’s commitment to rapid action.
Despite the ongoing relief operations, DSWD assures the public that their stockpiles remain sufficient. Currently, the agency holds over 545,000 family food packs and nearly P240 million worth of non-food relief items. These include kitchen sets, sleeping kits, and hygiene packs stored strategically across Mindanao and Western Visayas for quick distribution.
Collaboration with Local Authorities
The department also continues to coordinate closely with the Ministry of Social Services and Development in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. This partnership ensures that aid reaches all affected residents efficiently and without delay.
The proactive efforts by the DSWD highlight the government’s dedication to supporting communities during this challenging period. As heavy rains persist, authorities maintain vigilance and readiness to respond to emerging needs.
